New State Training Requirement Impacts Local Medical Practices Using X-Ray Machines

A new regulation is reshaping how many small medical practices operate across the state. Effective 2027, for current staff taking general X-rays without a full credential, there is a new mandated requirement to complete a 40-hour training program and 12 hours of continuing education every 24 months thereafter.

This change affects a wide range of healthcare providers that use portable or in-office X-ray equipment, including:

* Chiropractors
* Podiatrists
* Orthopedic clinics
* Urgent care centers
* Family practice physicians
* Ambulatory surgery centers that use a portable X-Ray machines for medical therapeutic or research.

The intent behind the regulation is to ensure standardized safety and accuracy in diagnostic imaging, especially when performed by individuals who are not registered X-ray technologists. The training will cover essential topics such as radiation safety, equipment handling, and image quality assurance.

RadiationAcademy.com was born out of a clear need: to help medical practices quickly adapt to the new 40-hour training requirement for non-registered X-ray techs. Recognizing the burden this placed on small clinics and offices, the founders—veterans in radiology and healthcare education—created a streamlined, affordable online program that delivers state-compliant training without disrupting daily operations. By combining expert instruction with flexible, on-demand access, RadiationAcademy.com fills the gap efficiently and economically, empowering healthcare teams to stay compliant and focused on patient care.

Regulation Changes...Explained

What are the details of the current changes?

  • New Training Mandate:Individuals currently operating x-ray machines who are not fully certified must complete a minimum 40-hour training program by March 13, 2027.
  • Statement of Assurance:Employers must provide a "Written Statement of Assurance" for any unlicensed individuals taking x-rays in their office, confirming they will meet the 40-hour training requirement by 2027.
  • Continuing Education:After completing the 40-hour training, limited scope radiographers are required to obtain 12 hours of continuing education every 24 months to maintain their status.
  • Scope of Training:The 40-hour training must include both clinical and didactic components and should be competency-based, focusing on specific limited radiography procedures.
  • Existing Credentials:These rules do not change existing requirements for fully credentialed radiologic technologists, but they establish new initial and continuing education requirements for limited scope operators.

Why were the changes made?

  • Improved Patient Safety:The goal of the new regulations is to ensure that only individuals with appropriate education and training operate medical imaging equipment, reducing unnecessary radiation exposure and retakes.
  • Increased Accountability:The changes help standardize training and competency for limited-scope radiographers, which was previously inconsistent.
